Looking into media’s use of Facebook Groups

Nieman Lab reporter Christine Schmidt recently took a look at how news organizations are utilizing Facebook Groups are “nurturing communities around a common thread, an event, or a locality, or gathering subscribers/fans in one centralized place.”

This article has a lot of good information, and it does create some questions. For students, Facebook might not be the social media platform of choice. However, the sheer number of users should make them consider how to strategically use the network to reach news consumers. With so many people already there, Facebook could be a prime location for hosting public discourse.
